Structural Design Delivering Performance to Specification

Structural design plays a central role in ensuring a canopy performs as intended. Each design is developed in response to the specific requirements as set out in the original specification, taking into account factors such as location, scale and intended use.

Industry Standards

All canopies produced are designed and manufactured in line with recognised UK and European standards, ensuring safety, consistency and long-term performance. Where applicable, structural steelwork is UKCA marked and fabricated in accordance with BS EN 1090, providing assurance of quality and compliance across each project. (Smaller structures, such as entrance canopies and cycle stores, may be exempt depending on scope and classification).

Structural Design and Loading

Structural performance is defined through detailed design calculations, carried out in accordance with BS EN 1991 to accurately account for wind and snow loads. Canopies are also developed in line with the wider Eurocode framework, including BS EN 1990 for structural principles, BS EN 1992 for concrete, and BS EN 1993 for steel. Together, these standards ensure each canopy is engineered to perform safely and reliably within its environment.

Structural Frameworks and Layout

The structural layout determines how loads are transferred safely to the ground. Cantilever canopies are supported from one side only, creating open, column-free spaces, but requiring careful engineering to manage higher forces and ensure secure anchoring. In contrast, portal frame or multi-post canopies use a more traditional arrangement, distributing loads across multiple supports to improve overall stability. The final approach is always shaped by the demands of the project and the characteristics of the individual space.

Materials and Build Quality

When it comes to fabrication, the canopy is manufactured using proven materials and processes designed to deliver strength and long-term performance. Structural steel, typically S235 grade, is utilised for its reliability and ability to support larger spans. To enhance durability, galvanising can be applied, providing a robust, corrosion-resistant finish.

Galvanising can be specified as coating and material internally and externally, delivering excellent long-term protection by coating the steel in a zinc layer to resist corrosion. For projects where both protection and aesthetic flexibility are required, a combination of galvanising and polyester powder coating can be specified. This approach offers increased durability alongside the option to introduce RAL classic colours, although the finish may be slightly less smooth due to the nature of the galvanising process. Alternatively, powder coating alone can be selected with a specific RAL classic colour, where you would get a smoother finish, whilst protecting the structure.

Cladding materials, including PVC fabric, polycarbonate, or toughened safety glass, are then selected based on canopy requirements, visual preference, and the site location.

All canopies are installed using high-strength fixings, ensuring all connections are secure and designed for long-term reliability.

Connections and Foundations

Every canopy is only as effective as its foundations and connection points. Foundations are designed to do more than support weight, they must also resist uplift and overturning forces caused by wind. This requires carefully considered foundation design to ensure long-term stability. Where canopies connect to existing buildings, the structure is assessed to confirm it can accommodate the additional loads, with suitable fixing methods selected to ensure a secure and reliable connection.
